Nutrition TutorialProblem 1: Energy StorageThe energy yield from the complete oxidation of fat is 9 kcal/g. Carbohydrate oxidation yields only 4 kcal/g. Fats can be stored in nearly anhydrous form because of their hydrophobicity (water hating), but the hydrophilic carbohydrates like glycogen are very hydrated with about 2 g of water bound per g carbohydrate. If a person weighs 70 kg (about 154 lb) and is 16% fat, how much extra weight would have to be carried to have the same amount of potential energy stored as glycogen?
