HIV and AIDS Problem Set

Problem 2: Risk for HIV transmission

Which activity has a high risk of HIV transmission?

A. Living with someone who is HIV+
B. Receiving a blood transfusion today, with blood that has been screened for HIV
C.

Sexual intercourse without a condom

Sexual intercourse without a condom represents a significant risk for HIV transmission. Semen or vaginal fluid from HIV-infected individuals can contain high levels of virus. Intercourse can cause small abrasions in the vagina or rectum, providing HIV with direct access to the bloodstream. Other high risk activities include performing oral sex and sharing unsterilized needles for IV drug use or tattoos.

D. Working as a paramedic
