Nucleic Acids and the Genetic Material Problem Set 1

Problem 12 Tutorial: mRNA and protein coding

Under conditions where methionine must be the first amino acid, what protein would be coded for by the following mRNA?

5'-CCUCAUAUGCGCCAUUAUAAGUGACACACA-3'

The genetic code

First find the 5'-AUG sequence that codes for the initiation amino acid, methionine. Then write the codons for the next amino acids. You must use the table to show that UGA is a stop codon. Amino acids determined by the other codons can then be read off the table.
