Problem 7: Carbon Fixation

Tutorial to help answer the question:

The process of fixing carbon dioxide into carbohydrates directly requires all of the following molecules except ______________.

A.

oxygen

B.

ATP

C.

NADPH

D..

carbon dioxide

Tutorial

Carbon dioxide is reduced to form carbohydrates during the light independent process. ATP and NADPH provides energy and electrons to reduce the carbon dioxide. This process takes place in the stroma of the chloroplast. The light independent process is also called the dark reactions because light is not required.

Oxygen is generated during the light dependent process as a by-product of splitting water. Oxygen in not directly involved in carbohydrate synthesis in the light independent process.
